IT and the Shaping of New Social Order

이 책은 지난 40년 동안의 사회 변혁을 IT 분야 중심으로 살펴보고, 이를 바탕으로 “디지털 사회”의 미래 전망에 대해 논한다. 분석 방법으로는 기술과 사회 사이의 상호 인터페이스를 전제로 하는 SST(Social Studies of Technology) 틀을 적용했다.
책을 통해 저자가 내놓는 세 가지 전망은 다음과 같다. 먼저 정보혁명은 단순한 기술 혁명이 아니다. 그것은 기술과 사회 사이의 상호 작용의 결과로 간주하여야 한다. 둘째, 구조적 전환과 같은 사회 환경의 변화가 사회 정보화의 끝이 아닐 수도 있다. 오히려, 문화적, 정신적, 그리고 제도적 측면의 변화는 기술 시스템과 사회 시스템의 인터페이스를 활성화하는데 더 많이 기여하기 때문에 명백하고 외부적 변화보다 더 중요하다. 마지막으로 정보사회를 독립된 문명의 단위로 여길 수 없다. 대신, 정보 사회는 다가올 융합 문명의 전조로 여겨지거나 기껏해야 산업 문명과 융합 문명을 연결해 주는 과도기적인 범주의 문명으로 생각된다.
