《Contemporary Korean Culture》는 현대 한국인의 정신적 지형과 태도에 오늘까지도 깊은 영향력을 행사하고 있는 샤머니즘과 유교에 대한 천착을 통해 한국인의 정체성과 한국 문화의 일단을 살펴보고 있습니다. 샤머니즘과 유교는 한국인의 물질주의, 현세 지향성, 운명과 점에 대한 믿음, 미신적 성향, 가족주의, 집단주의, 가부장제, 교육열과 같은 한국인의 행동 양식과 ‘심성’을 이해할 수 있는 근원이자 뿌리이기도 합니다. 이 두 근원을 통해 한국 문화에 대한 역사적이면서 또한 종교적・비교문화적・심리적・인류학적인 분석을 전개하면서 저자들은 한국인을 형성해 낸 한국 문화의 복합적이고 다층적인 두께를 낱낱이 열어 보여 주고자 시도하고 있으며, 샤머니즘과 유교가 한국 문화의 하나의 전통, 하나의 이념에 불과한 것이 아님을 확인시켜 주고 있습니다.

김은기 교수는 문화사회학과 종교학, 한국학에 천착해 온 학자로서 그동안 주로 해외 유수의 저널에 인종, 세대, 종교 등 현대 한국사회의 여러 사회적, 문화적 이슈들에 대한 연구결과들을 발표해 왔습니다. 공저자인 최준식 교수는 종교학을 학문적 배경으로 한국의 문화와 종교에 관한 다수의 저작들을 이미 내놓은 바 있으며, 특히 미신 혹은 무속으로 왜곡되어 온 ‘무교’를 주제로 한 저술을 통해 한국 문화에 대한 깊은 이해를 시도하기도 했습니다.
