Race and American Literature

Race and American Literature(『인종과 미국문학』)는 미국문학사에서 “인종”이라는 개념이 차지하는 중요성을 규명한 영문 도서이다. 이 책은 16세기 중반에 스페인에서 출판된 까베자 데 바까의 『난파자들』부터 20세기 중반에 출판된 랠프 엘리슨의 『보이지 않는 인간』에 이르기까지 4세기에 걸쳐 출판된 여행기, 난파기, 일기, 인디언 유수기, 노예 탈출기, 시, 소설, 산문의 다양한 장르를 취급한다. 논의되는 작가들도 미국문학의 정전에 속하는 에머슨, 멜빌, 휘트만, 더글러스, 듀 보이스, 엘리슨와 함께 잘 알려지지 않은 16∼19세기의 작가들을 포함한다. 이 책은 백인작가들의 작품에 내재된 인종차별주의를 분석하고, 이러한 인종차별주의에 대한 저항담론에서 시작된 흑인문학의 중요성을 강조한다. 궁극적으로 이 책은 문화/학 다원주의로 향하는 미국의 역사에서 흑인문학이 갖는 중요성을 강변하고 있다.
The African American slave narrative changes the racial structure of bondage of the Puritan captivity narrative. The slave narrative also reverses the dominant rhetorics, metaphors, and symbolisms of the captivity narrative. With the reversals, the antebellum slave narrative takes issues with most conspicuous components of the Puritan captivity narrative: the providential interpretation of one s bondage, the biblical typology of captivity, the jeremiadic element, the outward thrust of an American jeremiad, the images of Native Americans, the images of the American wilderness, and the treatment of sex. In so doing, the African American genre ultimately changes the significance of racial bondage from an allegorical one based on Christian exegeses of the Bible to a literal one rooted in a specific sociohistorical context. The slave narrative, then, recalls the captivity narrative only to subvert literary expectations and extraliterary ideologies inscribed in the traditional white genre. In other words, the slave narrative reads race into the captivity narrative, thereby disclosing the received texts” ethnocentrism and/or racism, correcting their misconceptions, and ultimately expanding their angle of vision.
